GAC to Audit US Government Funded Projects in Liberia

The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the General Auditing Commission (GAC) on Tuesday, 13 March 2012 signed a Memorandum of Understanding which allows the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to audit all USAID funded projects being implemented by the Government of Liberia through various Ministries and Agencies.  Signing for USAID was Kimberly Rosen, the Deputy Mission Director of USAID and for the GAC was the Acting Auditor General, Hon. Winsley S. Nanka.

 

The USAID Deputy Mission Director described the signing of the MOU as a clear testament of GAC’s achievements and professional performance. She promised that her institution will continue to work with the GAC in improving the government’s accountability drive.

 

For his part, the Acting Auditor General indicated that the signing ceremony was in recognition of the quality of work the GAC has done over the years. “This is a good day for GAC and Liberia. It is an indication of the explicit confidence the international community has in the GAC,” the Acting Auditor General said.

 

Mr. Nanka indicated that the GAC will continue to demonstrate the highest ethical standards as it positions itself as a world class supreme audit institution, adding that the GAC will strive to meet the expectation of USAID and the US Government.

 

He lauded the European Union, the United States Government and other international partners who have been contributing to GAC’s capacity-building and infrastructural programs.

 

Also speaking at the ceremony, on behalf of Finance Minister, Amara Konneh was Mr. Henry B. Horton, Jr., Acting Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs. He expressed thanks to USAID for its support to the GAC and hoped that this support will continue in the years ahead. He maintained that the GAC had played a pivotal role in the country. “We have seen the GAC as a checkmate of the government and they have done so well.” He expressed Minister Konneh’s pledge to fully support the success of the MOU.
